Overwintering orchids: what should you look out for?

Winter can be a challenge for your orchids, but with the right care, they will stay healthy and strong during this period too. How do you care for an orchid in winter? We’ll give you the most important tips so your orchids get through the winter effortlessly!

How do I care for an orchid in winter?

  1. Water less
Orchid growth slows down in winter, meaning they need less water. Only water when the roots turn silvery and make sure no water remains at the bottom of the pot. This prevents root rot.
  2. Place your orchid in a bright spot
Days are shorter in winter, so make sure your orchid gets enough daylight. Place it in a spot close to the window, but avoid direct sunlight. A south-facing window with a light curtain filter is ideal.
  3. Watch the temperature
Orchids love a constant temperature between 16 and 22 degrees. Don’t place them too close to a heater, as the dry air can dry out their leaves. A little humidity works wonders.
  4. Avoid drafts and cold
Orchids are sensitive to cold and drafts. Make sure they aren’t placed near open windows or doors where cold air comes in.
  5. No extra plant food
Your orchid doesn’t need any food during the winter months. Save the extra feeding for spring, when the plant starts growing more actively again!

By watering slightly less in winter, choosing the right location, and avoiding temperature fluctuations, your orchid will stay healthy and strong. With these tips, your orchid is ready to bloom fully again in the spring!
