In the Kolibri nursery, we work with an innovative outdoor screen. This smart system helps us save energy and optimally regulate the climate in the greenhouse. This is how we ensure strong orchids and a lower impact on the environment.
What is an outdoor screen?
An outdoor screen is a special screen cloth placed on the outside of the greenhouse. It opens and closes automatically, depending on sunlight, temperature, and weather conditions.
Because the screen is on the outside, it blocks solar heat or cold before it even reaches the glass. That makes the system more efficient than a traditional screen on the inside of the greenhouse.
An energy-efficient greenhouse in summer and winter
The outdoor screen helps us regulate the greenhouse in a natural way.
In the summer, it reflects part of the sunlight, so the greenhouse heats up less quickly. This reduces the need for cooling.
In the winter, the screen actually has an insulating effect. It helps keep heat inside, meaning we need less energy to keep the greenhouse at the right temperature.
By dealing smartly with sun and heat, we lower energy consumption and limit CO₂ emissions. That is an important step towards an environmentally friendly nursery.
A stable climate for our orchids
Orchids grow best in a stable environment. Large fluctuations in temperature or light can affect the quality of the plant.
Thanks to the outdoor screen, there is:
a more even climate
less extreme heat
better insulation in the cold
less stress for the crop
In combination with other sustainable techniques, such as dehumidification and LED lighting, we are building a modern and future-oriented way of growing.
