Why is humidity so important for orchids?
Orchids are strong plants, but they do like balance. Too much moisture in the air can cause fungi or diseases. Conversely, air that is too dry can cause stress.
In a greenhouse, moisture is automatically created by:

In the past, excess moisture was removed by opening a window. That worked, but it cost a lot of heat and therefore energy.
That is why modern nurseries use a dehumidification system.
How does a dehumidification system work?
In our modern orchid greenhouse, moist air is not simply discharged outside. Instead, the air passes through a heat exchanger. This removes the excess moisture from the air while the heat is retained.
That recovered heat is then reused to heat the greenhouse or to bring incoming air up to temperature. This way, the energy stays within the system.
This ensures:
less heat loss
lower energy consumption
a more stable climate
drier leaves and less chance of fungi
Instead of opening windows and losing heat, the climate is now smartly regulated with a closed and energy-efficient system. That is better for the plant and for energy consumption.
