Because did you know that it takes about a year before they can be in your home? In our orchid nursery, we apply sustainable solutions during cultivation to ensure sustainable growth with respect for nature.
Orchid nursery – journey of the Kolibri Orchids
Young orchids arrive at our facility as plugs. As you can see in the image, these are orchids with short leaves and roots. With the help of a potting machine specially made for the orchid nursery, we pot these plugs into a cultivation pot. Thanks to the potting machine, orchid bark is automatically added to the cultivation pot. This ensures the plugs are stable and ready to enter a new growth phase. From now on, the orchids stay in a warm department for about 16 to 18 weeks, where leaves and roots grow.
Next phase of the orchid nursery
After 16 to 18 weeks, the orchids are given more space by placing them in a cultivation vase. These cultivation vases are called PGCs and ensure that we make optimal use of the space in the orchid nursery. These PGCs also ensure that we save energy and fertilizers, that roots do not grow into each other, and that the leaves and branches of the orchid grow upwards. As soon as the orchids have been placed in a cultivation vase, they go back to a warm department.
After 6 weeks, we move the orchids to a cold department in the orchid nursery. This triggers a shock response in the orchids, causing them to start producing flower spikes. As soon as the flower spikes are large enough, the orchids go to the staking department to be set up firmly and neatly upright.
The end of the journey in the orchid nursery approaches
After staking, we move the orchids to a new department, called the flowering buffer. Here they will stay for another 3 to 14 days before they are ready for sale and transport.
Before the orchids leave our orchid nursery, we give them the Kolibri Orchids brand look. Here we give them a pot cover and label as shown in the image below. Every Kolibri Orchids belongs to an orchid family, which you can see on the pot cover.
As soon as an order of Kolibri Orchids is packed, our transport employees ensure that packed orders are transported on time to a customer, such as a florist or garden center. As a Kolibri fan, you will probably recognize our products here.
