This time, sales employee Matthijs tells you more about working in the orchid nursery and his role.
New challenge at Kolibri Company
‘’Not so long ago, I came across the vacancy at Kolibri Company. A friend sent it to me and I became curious. The vacancy appealed to me and I decided to apply. My curiosity was mainly piqued because I already worked at an orchid grower, but was curious about how things go at other nurseries. Not only that, the young team at Kolibri also attracted me. After the application, I could start quickly and have been working as a sales employee since March 2022.”
In total, we work with three salespeople and each salesperson has their tasks. For example, I focus on processing orders and I prepare quotes. Talking to and advising our business customers is a daily task, and weekly I guide these customers during a tour of our nursery. With our wide range, it’s nice that we as salespeople advise them on making choices.’’
A Kolibri day as a salesperson
‘’In the horticulture sector, we start early in the morning and I start by reviewing and processing placed orders. All orders are forwarded to the flowering buffer where our order pickers set the plants ready to be packed. I keep the phone with me all day, because customers can call at any time and we must be easily accessible to answer questions. Every day I walk a round in the nursery to map out the range and know which species are available.’’

Orchid Inspiration Days
‘’An event that stands out for me is the Orchid Inspiration Days. This annual event takes place for about two weeks, where various orchid nurseries open their doors to business customers. As a nursery, we participate in the event and show our latest ideas and Kolibri Orchids here. As salespeople, these are fun and busy days where we speak to many business customers.’’
Growth opportunities
‘’Kolibri Company offers growth opportunities and listens to your ambitions within the company. As a salesperson, I strive for more responsibility to be a point of contact for customers with large orders. I also increasingly stand independently at trade fairs to talk to customers, which makes me more recognizable as a salesperson. My fellow salespeople have been working at Kolibri Company for more than ten years, so they have already built up fixed customer contacts. In addition, I follow a development program offered by Kolibri Company. Here, as an employee, you can follow video lessons to develop yourself in leadership or communication.”
The best part of my job? It’s varied work where I perform many different tasks. You are in contact with different customers and in contact with all Kolibri employees, making you an important spider in the web.’’
