It is therefore not unusual to wonder ‘How do I know what kind of orchid I have?’. After all, there are more than 25,000 species of orchids! How do I know what kind of orchid I have?

With so many species of orchids, it can be overwhelming, but thanks to their physical characteristics, you can recognize different orchids with our tips. To identify species, we look at the flower shape, leaf structure, and growth patterns, which vary for each species. We explain more about this under the heading orchid species. For example, you have orchids that let their roots grow freely in the air or orchids that have a striking lip. A characteristic of every orchid is that it stands out with its colors and patterns, which makes them special and exotic.

How many species of orchids are there?

It is estimated that there are more than 25,000 species of orchids to discover. The species range from epiphytic orchids to orchids that thrive well in soil as a nutrient source.

  • Phalaenopsis
    One of the most popular orchid species is the Phalaenopsis. They are known for their elegant appearance thanks to the striking flowers that resemble a flying butterfly.   • Cymbidium
    Cymbidium orchids have long, graceful flower stems with multiple flowers in various colors. The flowers resemble small boats and form an impressive cluster. The foliage is long and slender.
  • Dendrobium
    How do you recognize the Dendrobium orchid species? These orchids have slender stems with small flowers growing along them. They come in various colors and often have a soft appearance. The leaves also grow on the stem, in between the flowers.

  • Cattleya
    Cattleya orchid species have large flowers with striking colors and scents. The flower structures are known for their royal appearance and are often frayed at the edges.
  • Oncidium
    This orchid is a joy to look at. The flowers seem to dance on the stem. They are known for their many small flowers on the stem. The most common colors are yellow, pink, and brown tones.
  • Paphiopedilum
    If one orchid stands out among all these orchid species, it is the Paphiopedilum. You can recognize the orchid by the flowers that resemble shoes or slippers. They have striking patterns and come in various colors. They are therefore also nicknamed the Venus slipper.
  • Vanda
