Stress, busyness, and constant distractions are often the order of the day these days. We rush from one obligation to another and hardly take the time to stop and relax. Fortunately, there are various forms of relaxation, such as meditation. A simple and effective meditation exercise that helps with this is the body scan. But what is a body scan meditation and what is it good for? We’ll explain it to you!
What is a body scan meditation?
The body scan is a meditation exercise in which we consciously focus our attention on different parts of our body. The goal is to observe the sensations, tensions, and perceptions in our body with full attention, without judgment. This is exactly what a body scan is good for. By concentrating on our physical experiences, we can strengthen the connection between body and mind and achieve inner peace.
How do you do a body scan?
To perform a body scan, follow these steps:
- Find a quiet and comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed.
- Sit or lie down in a relaxed position, for example on a mat or in bed.
- Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breathing. Become aware of the inhalation and exhalation without changing them.
- Start at your toes and slowly bring your attention to each part of your body, from bottom to top.
- As you bring your attention to each part of your body, notice what you feel – tension, relaxation, warmth, cold, and so on – and accept it without judgment.
- Stay with each body part for a few breaths before moving on to the next.
- Slowly scan up to your head, giving each part the same attention and care.
- When you have completed the body scan, bring your attention back to your breathing and observe it for a few moments.
You decide how often you perform a body scan, doing it as needed. Want to perform a guided body scan? You can find easy scans to follow on platforms like YouTube or Spotify.
