To make optimal use of space in our orchid nursery, we use Plant Growth Cells. We also call these PGCs, and you can recognize them by their hexagonal shape, which allows them to fit together perfectly on a table. An innovative solution that we apply during the cultivation of our Kolibri Orchids.
Advantages of PGC
A PGC is an innovative and sustainable solution in our nursery and has many advantages. Thanks to PGCs, we make optimal use of the space, making it possible to place more orchids on tables. Other advantages of PGC are:
- Leaves and branches remain better protected
- 20% savings on energy and fertilizers (so a lot more sustainable 😉)
- Roots do not grow into each other
- Higher average number of branches per plant
Finally, the PGCs are reusable and are disinfected in a specially designed wash line with UV light.
When do we use PGCs?
Before we place our orchids in a PGC, they spend 16 to 18 weeks in a warm department. After those weeks, we place each orchid separately in a PGC. This is done with the help of an automatic machine, which places each PGC on the tables. Because the machine places them exactly next to each other, a honeycomb structure is created.
